Validation Study of New FRPN Coparenting Measure Published in Family Process

This article documents the development and validation of a new 11-item coparenting measure specifically for low-income, nonresident fathers. FRPN researchers developed this scale by conducting focus groups with nonresident fathers and then administering the scale to 542 nonresident fathers.

Statistical analyses of the scale revealed three distinct and reliable self-perceived coparenting factors: undermining, alliance and gatekeeping. This measure was related to a substantial number of convergent and predictive validity constructs.

Fatherhood programs serving low-income fathers can use these new measures to track changes in coparenting following the delivery of services. The advance publication of the article can be found online here.

New Research Funding Opportunity

The Institute for Research on Poverty (IRP) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison has announced a new research funding opportunity for PhD holding scholars at all career stages and from all disciplines.

The purpose of the research initiative is to improve child support operations and policies. Projects may focus on a variety of programs or interventions including fatherhood, coparenting and employment programs for noncustodial parents.

IRP anticipates funding four to eight projects, with total funding (including direct and indirect costs) ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 each. The award period is from March 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019. The proposal deadline is January 2, 2018.
