Beginning with a theoretical article on developmental aspects of becoming a father, Phil has been working in collaboration with his wife, Carolyn Pape Cowan, on interventions to strengthen couple (coparenting) relationships and enhance the quality of father involvement during family life transitions. Their work began with middle-income couples becoming parents and couples with a first child entering elementary school. More recently in the Supporting Father Involvement project the two have evaluated groups for low-income Hispanic, African-American and European American fathers and mothers. The results of these evaluations have been published in two books, a number of book chapters and dozens of peer-reviewed articles.
